Jasper Rotary Celebrates a Successful Year and Bestows Honors

On Thursday, June 4th 2009, the Rotary Club of Jasper honored a local humanitarian by bestowing a Paul Harris Fellow Award in recognition of his service to the world community.  Dr. Tom Camp, a long time partner of the Jasper Rotary Club in International Service, has been providing humanitarian care to the people of Limon Honduras and surrounding areas for many years.  This care extends beyond his expertise in the medical and health field to issues of an environmental nature, improvements in literacy, skills training and educational opportunities.  The Jasper Rotary Club has contributed to AHMEN projects for 6 years and chose Dr. Camp as their first Honorary Paul Harris Fellow Awardee.

 

The Paul Harris Fellow Award:

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.  The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world.  Every amount contributed to The Rotary Foundation is spent in support of humanitarian, educational, and cultural programs and their operations. Clubs and districts apply for and receive Foundation grants to carry out worthy projects worldwide.

Started in 1917, the Rotary Foundation has grown from a small contribution of $26.50 to a powerful $1 billion endowment today.  After Rotary founder Paul P. Harris died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.  To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contributed in their name.
