FEBRUARY, 2002 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Dear Fellow Rotarians, I would like to say "Thank You!" Primarily for your attendance, participation and support of our programs this year, but also for your commitment to our community. The President of the United States in his Address to the Union Speech asked each American to commit to helping our neighbors. You, as Rotarians, are already doing just that. Could you imagine our community if everyone were Rotarians. Of course, that's not 100% possible, but our community would be an entirely different place to live if everyone were committed to Service Above Self. Our programs
for the remainder of the year have been finalized, but I encourage each
of you to give great thought to a major project we can undertake next
year. Allow yourselves to dream big, because we are limited only by our
inabilities to dream. Then share these ideas with Linda Burns, our President-Elect.
Rotarians, you are the foundation, let's build something great in Jasper.
Our competition is only half-way through with still two months to go with new members, Easter Egg Hunt, banquet, reading program and District Conference remaining to gain points for your team. New members late in the game could be a deciding factor. Scores will be kept confidential until the Annual Banquet on April 4th. ANNOUNCEMENTS RYLA: Jasper Rotary is sending five Interact Club members to RYLA in Montgomery February 21 - 24. Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) is an intensive training program for community youth leaders. Young people chosen for their leadership potential attend a camp to discuss leadership skills and to develop those skills through a variety of programs. Easter Egg Hunt: Will be Saturday, March 30th at the old airport. Activities will include games, food, prizes, children's activities and the Egg Hunt. Rotarians will be given 10 tickets to sell for the event. Volunteers will be needed to prepare for the Hunt and to work the day of. Linda Burns, chairperson of the event, will be recruiting volunteers soon. This is a major fund-raiser for Jasper Rotary and we need everyone's participation to make it a success. Board Meeting will be Monday, February 11. Rotarians responsible for the programs in March are Betsy Lavanna, Jerald Sherer, Fred May, Vince Lavanna. Upcoming: The GSE team from Argentina will be visiting Jasper April 4 - 8. April 6th all Club Leaders will be attending the District Assembly in Birmingham. District Conference will be April 25 - 28.
ROTARIAN OF THE MONTH This month we would like to congratulate Torrie Grelle, "Rotarian of the Month". Torrie, most recently, served as the coordinator for the Daily Mountain Eagle Shoe Fund. This project is very significant in our community and has been for many years. Her involvement in this project is what we've come to expect from our fellow Rotarians. Torrie relocated to Jasper five years ago from Texarkana, Texas. Her husband is Kerry Grelle and she is the mother of two children, Colby and Kenzi. Torrie is active in her church where she sings in the choir and teaches 9th grade Sunday school. Additionally, Torrie serves on the AlaCare Hospice Board and the Walker High Transitional Team. She has also done a great job with public relations for our club this year. Torrie is truly a Rotarian we can all be proud of. Congratulations, Torrie!
