MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Dear Fellow Rotarians:
The time has finally come for me to begin the journey as your new President. I hope it goes well! I’m depending on you all for advise, input and moral support - why? Because we are a family and we have a common purpose.
I’ve just returned from the 94th Annual Rotary International Convention in Brisbane, Australia and I must say I am impressed. I’m also grateful to the club for allowing me to attend the convention. Everyone should have the opportunity to attend an international convention. They really go all out and you get a great sense of what Rotary is about. Hearing about the work done by Rotarians throughout the world - by small clubs, large clubs and even individuals - is inspiring.
I’ve got a big year planned for us and I’m hoping for 100% involvement. I would like to see good attendance for all members, great speakers, fun events, successful fundraisers and exciting service projects. Our incoming board is working toward these goals and more to make this a meaningful and productive year. Have a good idea? Let me know what it is.
Keep an eye on our website
www.jasperrotary.org for announcements as they happen and a new link for event photos. The website has been updated for the new year, so take a look at it. Also, if I don’t have your email address, send it to me at pfikes@dir.state.al.us.Remember - our community depends and thrives on the service of its members. Please keep this in mind throughout the coming year as the Jasper Rotary Club seeks to make a difference.
Yours in Service
Pam Fikes

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Board Meeting - The next board meeting will be Monday, July 14th at noon in the Frances Israel Meeting Room in the cafeteria building.
Committee Sign-up - We will begin committee sign-up at the July 1st meeting. See the website for committee information. Choose a committee that will be handling the aspect of Rotary service that you are most interested in. We will also sign up on July 8th in case you miss the first opportunity. Anyone not making their wishes known by the 8th will be assigned to a committee by the board on the 14th. See the website link for committee descriptions.
Speakers Bureau - Cliff Rhodes and his committee will be polling members as they develop this year’s Speakers Bureau listing. Members will have opportunities to speak to high school students about a variety of subjects. Be thinking about what you prefer to talk about - your vocation, or something inspirational/motivational, or talk about goal setting or career planning. Whatever you prefer. Sharing our vocations with young people is a major Rotarian responsibility.
Programs - There is a link on our website for a list of members responsible for speakers for the Rotary year. There is also a "Theme" list that shows the theme for each month. If possible, choose a speaker who can talk about the current month’s theme. We’d like to have at least one theme speaker per month. Coordinate this with your team leader. Members responsible for speakers in August are Rick Brown - 5th, Charles Earnest - 12th, Dianne Greene - 19th, Bob Nolen - 26th. Contact Greg O’Rear if you need more information.
Business Meeting - July 29th - The agenda will include discussion regarding this year’s fund-raisers, the Centennial Project, and the financial condition of the club. ROTARY SPOTLIGHT
Gemma Sisia. A native Australian from New South Wales, Gemma decided while she was in college that she wanted to go to East Africa and teach after graduation. She was not training to be a teacher, but she had heard that teachers were needed and you didn’t have to be a certified teacher. So she went to a small village in East Africa to teach Math and English. (She actually ended up teaching sewing as well.) After returning to Australia in 1998, 26 year old Gemma decided she wanted to do more, so she started setting aside a small portion of her paycheck each month (about $5) and started a fund to sponsor the education of a Ugandan child. In time, people who knew her bought into the idea and contributed and then the community and churches got involved and started donating and before long, she had enough money to build a school - which she did. She built the school on land donated to her in a village in Tanzania, one building at a time. She has now built several buildings - with the help of volunteers, and brought in supplies, and secured a van to transport the children. Gemma has accomplished all of this in three years. She is now the Founder of The East Africa Fund as well as The School of St. Jude (- the patron saint of desperate cases). She accepts donations such as old computers and old books, funds to sponsor village children who need an education, your time - if you want to go there and teach or help build her school buildings. Gemma was asked to give a presentation at the Rotary International Convention because of her associations with Rotary and her success in East Africa. Gemma is an excellent example of what a single individual can do with the right motivation!
