July 2002

From the President -

Dear Fellow Rotarians:

Incoming president Linda Burns is attending the 2002 Rotary International convention in Barcelona, Spain this week and will enjoy many exciting activities and hear from a number of great speakers such as Mikhail Gorbachev - Nobel Peace Prize laureate and former president of the Soviet Union and Jerry Lewis - comedian and recipient of the Rotary Award of Honor for his humanitarian work. The focus is, as always, on service.

As pointed out by Rotary International President Richard King, Rotarians demonstrate not only a desire but an absolute need to serve. He also quotes Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, an honorary Rotarian, in the June edition of the ROTARIAN, who once said: “I don’t know what your destiny will be. But this I do know: the only ones among you who will ever be truly happy are those who have sought and found how to serve others.” According to President King, this is why Rotary has become such a vital force for good in the world. It gives people the opportunity to become their best selves, to become something better than they might otherwise have been.
(Quotes from Richard King’s monthly message for June 2002, pg 8).

Our community, as do all communities, depends and thrives on the service of its members. Please keep this in mind throughout the coming year as the Jasper Rotary Club seeks to make a difference.
