A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Fellow Rotarians:
Another successful project is behind us. The Golf Tournament netted us about $4,000, which is a pretty good return on our efforts. Thanks to everyone who helped with the planning and implementation of this project. We have quite a bit coming up in the near future and many of you will be called upon to help. We’ll begin our campaign to raise this year’s pledge to PolioPlus of $3,500. We’ll need to start making plans to host this year’s GSE Team from Taiwan. A fund raiser will need to be planned to fund our Centennial Project. Nominations for officers will have to be voted on in early December - anyone interested in being an officer in 2004/05 or anyone that wants to make a nomination for Secretary, Treasurer or President-elect for the 2004/05 Rotary year should contact the nominating committee: Pam Fikes, Cliff Rhodes, Russ Robertson or Tony Sparks.
District Governor Don Hadden visited with our club on October 28th and gave a very inspiring message to Rotarians which included President Majiyagbe’s goals for the year. In the coming months, you will hear more about our efforts to meet the goals of Pres. Jonathan’s hopes for this Rotary year, including a focus on literacy and education, poverty alleviation, health concerns and support for the Family of Rotary. Our club has worked to develop projects to improve literacy and education in the area and our Auxiliary Association Project will work to meet the Family of Rotary criteria.
Thanks for all your help and support.
Yours in Service
Pam Fikes
News from around the Rotary World
P
As of August 31, 2003, Rotary clubs and districts throughout the world had successfully raised $111,499,351 for the polio eradication fundraising campaign (PEFC), far surpassing the original goal of $80 million. This is in addition to the $500 million Rotary has committed to Polio Eradication since 1985, when the organization launched its first fundraising drive.P
The RI Nominating Committee for President of Rotary International in 2005-06 has chosen Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar of the Rotary Club of Goteborg, Sweden. He will become the official nominee on December 1 if there are no challenging candidates.P
Since 1962, Interact clubs have provided young people aged 14 -18 with opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in service projects, and encourage international understanding and goodwill, while creating enduring friendships with other members. World Interact Week, scheduled for November 3-9, offers an ideal occasion to promote Interact’s positive impact.P
Since 2000, the Rotary Club of Suita, Osaka Japan has been digging wells and installing water pumps at elementary schools near Pathein City, Myanmar. (The Union of Myanmar is a Republic in Southeast Asia), as part of a 5 year project to supply clean water to 100 schools and 10,000 schoolchildren and their communities. The wells cost about $350 each. The project began when Rotarians learned that many people depended on rivers and rainfall for drinking water. After alerting the local media, sizable public donations came pouring in.P
Visiting Rotarians discovered a staggering magnitude of need in Chernivtsi in the western Ukraine. A collapsed socioeconomic infrastructure exposed the city’s residents to extreme poverty and health problems. At the poorly equipped Neuro-Trauma Hospital, a quick tour revealed children going without medical care for hydrocephalus, brain injuries and tumors. The state of the hospital was extremely wretched - burned out light bulbs, women carrying water in buckets between floors, lack of linen, food and medicines. Sand was being used to clean sinks in the infectious diseases ward. With the support of an Individual Grant from the Rotary Foundation, a team of physicians was able to supply medical equipment and training at the hospital.
