JASPER ROTARY
NEWSLETTER
SEPTEMBER 2002
President’s Message
Dear Fellow Rotarians,
The month of September means going back to school and Football picks! Join us
weekly to choose your favorites. Tony Sparks chairs the football picks.
Remember, you must be present to win.
September will be our Polio Plus program month of speakers. We have Dr. Pat
Hyland to discuss polio and immunizations and Dr. Riley Lumpkin to discuss the
Polio Plus campaign. Our Jasper Polio Plus chairman is Dr. David Wesley. His
role is liaison and educator for the campaign. Bo Porter, our District Governor,
has set a goal of $100 per member over three years. Our local goal is $30 per
member this year ($3,000). Polio is 97% eradicated in the world. RI goal is to
eradicate the disease by 2005. Let us together support the reality.
According to David Wesley, it will cost $1 billion between 2002-2005 to meet the
goal of eradicating polio worldwide. So far, $725 million has been pledged, with
a shortfall of $275 million. The Rotary International goal is to raise $80
million and receive grants and matching funds to make up the balance.
The plaque for the courthouse square clock will be at the printers this month.
We will make a special dedication at some point once it is placed. The miniature
clocks have also been ordered and will be available later in the Fall.
Finally, I want to thank Greg O'Rear and all the Rotarians who have arranged
speakers in July and August. Our attendance is improved and we have had some
interesting topics. This is a commitment that everyone so far has made to
increase our quality and to maintain interest of our members. Please continue
the momentum.
Yours in Service
Linda Burns
